Two nights in a row this talented group of local Reno-based musicians tore the roof off the houses in which they share their ground-breaking yet old-school embracing sound with those who are bold enough to come out of their cozy, fireplace heated homes.  Once at Knitting Factory Concert House in the form of Status-FLO (opening for Sage Francis) and the next as NoBody Really w/The Rhythmatics ft. Anonymous Jones aka Chari “Knowledge” Smith of the only female-fronted live hip-hop group Northern Nevada needs to concern themselves with … Knowledge Lives Forever.

Update: It has come to light that Anonymous Jones is actually a group comprised of Tony L. Walker and Tsuyoshi “Yosh” Curtis of NoBody Really along with Chari “Knowledge” Smith of Knowledge Lives Forever, not solely Chari.

These artists, musicians … renaissance persons or whatever you may, feed off of each other’s energy while on-stage and carry many times their weight when it comes to setting a fire up underneath the proverbial behind of Reno’s underground music scene.  Like those West coast rappers have been saying since slanging tapes out the trunk of your car was a huge entrepreneurial step in marketing your music to the masses … if you don’t know, now you know.

Oh, right, camera stuff.  Shooting in RAW is definitely something that I’m kicking myself for not doing earlier (even for the ability to go back and ‘remaster’ previous shoots) and can definitely attest to furthering my overall knowledge and growth as a photographer.  The Nikon D7000 camera and Nikon 50mm f/1.8D lens which find themselves by my side as of late seemed to function well in the low-light setup The Alley is notorious for.  With aperture open to 1.8, shutter speed set at 1/250th of a second and ISO cranked up to 3200, the images were coming through a little dark, but caught enough of the light to touch up in Lightrrom 3 after the jump.  When the spotlight was caught by a performer, there seemed to be a bit of ‘burn’ in the resulting image and the color palette could be described as being overly flooded with red.  Again, nothing a bit of work in Lightroom couldn’t handle.  In fact, I’m quite proud of these images and I encourage you to click through on the ALL CAPS lettering below to view the full gallery.

Reno Santa Pub Crawl 2011

Reno Santa Pub Crawl 2011 Flyer

With 7000-8000 in expected attendance, I was on the fence as to whether or not I would be bringing my Nikon D7000 camera along for an evening of Ho Ho Ho’ing in downtown Reno for the 2011 Reno Santa Pub Crawl.  Well, I decided against it, having recently picked up an iPhone 4S and not wanting to trust thousands of drunk Santas (myself not excluded) with the well-being of my relatively expensive gear.  The iPhone 4S (fitted with Power Support USA anti-glare (front) / crystal (back) screen protectors) fit snugly in my front pocket and required a much less demanding schedule of maintenance on this alcohol-centered outing than the bulky DSLR would’ve any day of the week; and with the newly re-designed camera in-tow, I felt pretty darn confident with this as my go-to shooter of the evening … even if I wasn’t fitted with the freshest iPhone lenses from Photojojo.

For most (I believe all except for the screen capture of the map) of the shots seen in this post (and recently in my Instagram feed), I used iOS 5’s HDR setting when shooting the originals and began the editing process by combining the HDR image + the non-HDR (original) image in iCameraHDR.  The process continues in either TiltShiftGen, FX Photo Studio or picfx before finishing color and style and importing to Camera+ for part one of the border creation (round edges on a landscape-shaped image).  Part two of border creation (placing a non-square image neatly within the confines of a square) takes place in Squaready and the photos are (finally) uploaded to Instagram (no filter) in the format seen below.  This process was beyond horrendous using my previous device (iPhone 3G) and took nearly 15 minutes per photo.  With the iPhone 4S’ A5 processor stepping up to the plate here in late 2011, this process can now be completed in 5 minutes or less … which means more time for prancing around downtown Reno with our hypercolor plastic glasses and Santa hats!
