Pharoahe Monch: Hip Hop. Legend. Reno. These three words pretty much sum it up. Wait, no… We forgot two VERY important words in that list: NoBody Really. You don’t know? CLICK HERE for the skinny.
NoBody Really is comprised of a very real, Reno ‘renaissance man’, Tony Walker (aka Locus aka Talik aka doodles aka Poppa Fro) and along with fellow band mates Tsuyoshi “Yosh” Curtis and Joel “JBird” Cowell, NoBody Really is sure to satisfy any craving our readers may have for that perfect blend of homegrown Reno hip hop.
Having experienced several explosive opening sets, courtesy of Knowledge Lives Forever and Dreda Dre, the crowd was more than ready for DJ Quik to take the stage. At five past midnight on the evening of Tuesday, April 26th the West Coast rap legend did just that … and everything in the world was perfect within that moment.
As we’re sure that many of our readers already know, the musical journey of DJ Quik pre-dates widespread public fanfare of many seminal left coast rappers, including the likes of Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube and more, so we urge our readers to read up if they don’t yet know about this uber-talented multi-instrumentalist, rapper, producer, DJ and all-around superstar known best by those close to him as David Marvin Blake.
Many fans are getting to know the man behind the moniker of DJ Quik within the context of his 2011 release, The Book of David, and we have picked up a copy ourselves on Amazon, along with a couple of our previous favorites that needed to make their way back into our collection … such as the debut which started it all, Quik Is The Name, Way 2 Fonky and Safe + Sound.
What was already in our collection? Rhythm-al-ism, as this was the record which re-kindled not just our own, but many a fan’s affinity with the genius of DJ Quik back in 1998. Great summertime music, especially if there’s sunshine and a breeze to be had…
