Holy cow, holy water and holy crap did ¡Mayday! put on an AMAZING opening set for Tech N9ne at Knitting Factory Concert House this past June in Reno, NV. Keeping things numerically paired — like musicians walking onto Noah’s Ark — there were two dueling MC’s, two headbanging keyboard players who switched over to guitars mid-show and count them — two — masters of the beat cranking out the funky rhythm which exploded in a fiery storm upon a seemingly unsuspecting crowd.
Being the only photographer in the pit that evening, I had free rein to shoot at will, and only being limited to the first three songs of Tech N9ne’s set (not the opening groups), there was plenty of room to experiment with camera settings, positioning and a more artistic meets photo-journalistic approach to covering the opening acts.
I personally feel that the results from ¡Mayday!’s set, along with the rest of the evening were some of my best, and with the Nikon D7000 body and Nikon 50mm f/1.8D lens in tow, an ISO of 1600, aperture of 1.8 and shutter speed set to 1/250th of a second I was able to give these guys my full creative attention and connect with both individuals and the group as a whole in a way completely different than every other body in the venue … yet simultaneously in exactly the same way (new found fandom).
