Upon walking into the Knitting Factory last night, I was greeted with an all too familiar, yet seemingly disappeared sound from everyday listening (since the advent of dubstep) … drum ‘n bass!  Yes, there was a live band on-stage playing drum ‘n bass.  I was floored.

The group announced themselves at the end of their set as Nerve and were seen hanging out near the merch table during the later part of DJ Shadow’s headlining set later in the evening.  During their opening set, listeners were treated to a mix of dub reggae, drum ‘n bass, progressive rock and swirling electronics, all set directly in front of the ominous Shadowsphere.

A connection to the crowd was definitely present with this group’s music as deep and dubby grooves were taken to new heights with infusions of rock and electronica, which caused many concertgoers to jump up and take hold of the swelling rhythm filling the room, even myself not being able to withstand the urge to groove along while framing shots.

As per settings on the Nikon D7000 + AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8G ED body and lens combination being used, I kept aperture wide open at f/2.8, shutter speed constant at 1/200th of a second and a range of ISO from 1600-6400.  Lighting was variable, with lots of reds, blues, purples, greens and magentas washing out the entire stage.  Favorable lighting conditions were present in split-second doses, and many of the oversaturated colors ended up turning out as beautiful b&w shots, as seen in our selections below and the full gallery and prints sections.

The long and short of it is that if anyone were to ask me if I’d go see this band again, I would tell them “Yes” any day of the week.

Knowledge Lives Forever CD Release Party @ The Underground 2012-02-03

Reno’s finest female-fronted hip-hop / rock / soul / funk / acoustic crossover band, Knowledge Lives Forever, hosted a CD Release Party yesterday evening entitled The Trilogy … and I Shoot Reno was there to capture the magic.  At a little past 10:30 PM, Chari Smith and the first incarnation of her accompanying performers took the stage at The Underground for a no holds barred, dance floor filling, featured artist extravaganza with guests including, but not limited to local favorites Whitney Myer, Gia Torcaso and Mark Sexton with numerous others joining the stage throughout the evening.

This was definitely a fun show to attend, with a solid hour and a half long mix of genres spanning hip-hop, rock, acoustic and reggae with a super-special LED-lit beach ball accompaniment to “Warriors”, as seen in the video we shot from amid the dance floor posted below:

This was the first live music performance I had the opportunity to try out my newest piece of glass, and boy oh boy does the legendary AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8G ED live up to the reviews seen on Amazon and B&H Photo Video.  As The Underground is usually pretty dark when it comes to stage lighting, I was prepared with a wide-open aperture of 2.8 and ISO boosted to 6400 for the evening, along with my standard shutter speed of 1/250th of a second, which IMHO, produced some beautiful in-the-moment shots to commemorate this once-in-a-lifetime performance.
