It’s been a little while since I’ve posted on I Shoot Reno, and in my defense all I can say is that life is full of amazing opportunity.  Normally, I’d leave it at that, but one of these recent opportunities which didn’t manage to slip out from under the glass attached to my Nikon D7000 was the chance to accompany my wife and Chihuahua daughter to Scraps Dog Company’s annual Halloween party, Scary Tails Howl-O-Ween!

The event, in my humble opinion, was a TOTAL BLAST for our family; one which we would highly recommend to any other dog / animal lover out there.  Attendees at this free event received complimentary goodie bags at the door and a chance to spin the wheel for a guaranteed chance to win one of two types of treats.  Across the room other attendees could be seen playing a fun, ‘Bobbing for Buffalo Sausage’ event while those low enough to the ground discovered a misty ice chest of carbonated beverages.  Those a bit higher off the ground had ample access to plates of cookies, cauldrons of candy and glow-in-the-dark jewelry; all essential Halloween gear.

Now that I’ve mentioned gear, I’d just like to say that this was a pretty low-key event for those DSLR-wielding photographers out there reading this; essentially everyone in attendance was taking pictures with some sort of camera or smartphone to inevitably share on Facebook or with grandma after the jump.  So, yeah … no pressure.  Knowing that there would be lots of dogs in a relatively confined area, I, for the first time since March of this year, took the Nikon 50mm f/1.8D lens off and left it at home, subbing in the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR lens which came in the D7000 kit, as it is still my current go-to wide-angle solution.  This lens will soon be replaced, no doubt, but served its purpose quite well on this warm and sunny Saturday autumn afternoon.  While shooting, I alternated between the ‘Auto’ and the ‘No Flash’ settings on the D7000’s left dial and performed auto curve adjustment on each photo prior to posting using Adobe Photoshop CS5.1.

Zedd, hidden in a contrast of shadow and brilliant white...

Wow!  Zedd’s late June opening performance for Skrillex at Knitting Factory Concert House still remains quite memorable even after a couple endless weeks of summertime have since passed by.  While the bartenders looked a little bored, the youthful crowd was beyond energetic to say the least.  There were party people dancing with LED gloves, glowsticks and fuzzy knee-high boots, visors, sunglasses and raver candy galore … all getting down to a progressive, yet slightly commercial (yes, we did hear Lady Gaga) mix of electro house and dubstep.  Admittedly, it has been about ten years since I last attended a (il)legitimate rave party, and I can safely say that if this young DJ/producer/remixer couldn’t get you dancin’ … you need to invest in getting your mojo back!

Shooting this show was beyond challenging, but the crowd definitely made up for any lack of usable stage lighting; photographically at least.  While my trusty Nikon D7000 was fitted with the legendary Nikon 50mm f/1.8D lens, which makes up my usual standard for low-light shooting these days, it was a welcome challenge to compose shots using the white floods as a backdrop; which offered a more silhouette-based approach for close-ups and forced me out of my usual photographic ‘bubble’.  ISO’s ranged from 1000-1250 and shutter speed/aperture remained constant at 1/250th of a second and 1.8, respectively.  If you like what you see below, please check out the full gallery for even more and hit the like/tweet buttons to share with your friends … Zedd and I thank you in advance!
