Tech N9ne striking a pose for the camera at Knitting Factory Concert House…

Wow, how do I recount the most intense rap concert of my life?  Let me start by stating that the Tech N9ne show at Knitting Factory Concert House in Reno this past Sunday, June 26th a) sold out b) might have been my favorite show covered thus far for I Shoot Reno and c) popped a good friend o mine’s concert cherry.  Pardon my French, but for any non-believers out there … Tech N9ne KICKS ASS!

That having been said, let’s look at some of the reasons why this show was so entirely epic, shall we?  First of all, Tech N9ne’s 12th studio album released on June 6th, All 6′s And 7′s, debuted at number 4 on the Billboard 200 and peeked at number 1 on the Billboard Rap Albums chart.  Did I mention that he did this all without a video or radio play?  Strictly independent.  Strictly per his tremendous fan base.

Having shot three opening acts before Tech N9ne’s set, I had found the sweet spots for the settings on my Nikon D7000 w/Nikon 50mm f/1.8D lens in a wide open aperture of 1.8, my holy grail of shutter speeds at 1/250th of a second and a (relatively) slightly reduced ISO of 1250.  It was almost as if I wasn’t in control of the camera… Rather, the camera was controlling my body; tuning in to Tech N9ne’s stage presence and allowing for an honest and true depiction of one of today’s greatest performers within the realm of hip-hop and rap music.

Don’t take my word for it, click on the full gallery link just beneath this text to check out nearly 150 shots from the evening that I deem worthy of sharing with the world … your favorite may yet to be discovered!

A surprise opening set from Leba Hibbert, daughter of Toots and all-around amazing Jamaican singer...

When The Maytals announced Leba Hibbert’s surprise opening set at Knitting Factory Concert House this past Tuesday evening in Reno, I had no idea what to expect.  What I did know was that I needed to descend the stairs and make my way up to the pit ASAP.

Luckily, my intuition was spot-on and I was able to capture some amazing (in my opinion, at least) photos of the musically-endowed daughter of legendary reggae artist, Frederick “Toots” Hibbert, as backed by one of the word’s finest live bands, The Maytals.

Shooting specs for this set using my Nikon D7000 w/Nikon 50mm f/1.8D lens saw a fully-boosted ISO of 3200, my usual shutter speed of 1/250th of a second and a wide-open aperture of 1.8, which made for some pretty impressive shots when the white flood light was at a minimal presence, allowing the colored light to illuminate Leba’s adornments … including large star-shaped earrings, several sparkling rings, stacked bracelets and a bejeweled butterfly-shaped clip placed just above the pièce de résistance: a custom ‘LEBA’ belt buckle.  What else stood out?  Backlit highlights of Leba’s beautifully flowing, waist-length (dread) locks.
