Why did we want to cover Beats Antique’s performance at Grand Sierra Resort for Friday the 13th? The answer is quite simple, really. We have a photographic crush on Zoe Jakes. There, we said it. It’s official, folks. Besides this strictly professional ‘photo-crush’, we continue to be deeply moved by the music and mission of this pioneering ‘worldtronica’ group that incorporates, yet dares to be vastly different than that which is so commonly known in today’s music world as ‘dubstep’.
Armed with skilled multi-instrumentalists (Side Car) Tommy Cappel and David Satori on drums, keys, Ableton Live and a slew of prominent Eastern instruments, Beats Antique as a group is able to truly come alive on-stage. Mix in the world-famous belly dance routines of Zoe Jakes (The Yard Dogs Road Show, The Indigo, Miles Copeland’s Bellydance Superstars) and featured guest Kami Liddle, an international bellydance artist from nowhere else than … drum roll please [insert drum roll … ] Reno, NV (!!!), and you’ve got one of the HOTTEST touring shows we’ve ever seen. Hands down, this very well might have been the best show of the upcoming summer concert season, which technically, has yet to begin.
The gallery of photos assembled here today shares more than 275 ‘borrowed’ moments from the evening of Friday, May 13th 2011 on the world’s largest indoor stage at The Grand Theatre at Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, NV. From Zoe’s drum-bangin’ entrance to David and Tommy’s multi-instrumental juggling, amidst a literal circus of guest musicians and actors galore (LYNX, Buster Blue), topped off with the Friday the 13th massacre (think Jason meets Sesame Street on Easter Sunday) which took place made this an extremely special, one-of-a-kind, Reno-only encore. An encore which was nothing short of instrumental in making ourselves, and more than likely hundreds of other concertgoers tingle, from head to toe.
